What a difference a day makes…..tonight, the United U-18’s who looked so impressive against Burnley in the 4th Round of the FA Youth Cup went down to a 3-0 defeat at Ewood Park against an impressively well-organised Blackburn Rovers team. Blackburn announced themselves earlier in the season when they came to Carrington and weren’t remotely flattered by a 1-1 draw. They are currently top of United’s section in the Academy League and have yet to concede a goal in the Youth Cup this season.
Simply, put, United huffed & puffed but Blackburn were too well organised in defence and played a counter-attacking game that exploited United’s weaknesses in the full-back areas where Brown & Fryers, both just back from injury, looked a little rusty at times. A Blackburn goal before half-time put United under pressure to push forward after the break, but in doing so, they left themselves open to the counter and conceded two more goals late on, including a penalty, to give the score a lopsided and unrealistic appearance. So, that’s it for another year as far as the Youth Cup is concerned; a pity but then Blackburn were a very powerful unit.
Happier days; United U-18’s back in April 2009 as winners of the Torneo di Calcio Memorial Claudio Sassi in Italy
